Using Private Chat Direct Messages

In addition to the studio-wide private chat, StreamYard users can also DM (direct message) individual studio members to communicate with them privately!

Private chat messages are only visible to people in the studio and are never shown to viewers.

Here's how to send a participant a direct message

  1. Click on the Private chat tab on the right side of the studio.

💡

Links in the public comment feed are not clickable inside the StreamYard studio. They will appear as clickable on the destination platform (e.g., YouTube, Facebook) for your viewers, but not within StreamYard itself. If you need to share a clickable link with your studio guests or co-hosts during a broadcast, use the Private Chat instead.

Get someone’s attention with @ mentions - Prominent Chat Notifications

When you’re live, private chat messages can sometimes be easy to miss. To make sure your message is seen, you can use @ mentions in the studio private chat.

When you mention a participant using @, your message appears as a prominent banner on their screen, helping them notice it immediately—even while focused on the stream.

How to use @ mentions in private chat

  1. Open the Private chat tab in the studio.

  2. In the message box, type @, then start typing the display name of the person you want to mention.

  3. Select their name from the list (or press Enter).

  4. Type your message and send it.

Once sent, the mentioned participant will see your message displayed as a banner on their screen.

💡
Tip: Use @ mentions when you need someone’s attention urgently
