Troubleshooting Microphone Issues
Having Microphone issues can come from different variables, including Studio settings, Browser Settings, or Device Settings. StreamYard can only use microphones that your browser and system detect and list as available inputs. Here is a comprehensive guide to troubleshooting Mic Issues
-
Test your audio.
- If you go to Settings > Audio, and speak out loud, do you see the grey dots flashing green? - Is the correct mic selected? To check, click on Settings > Audio > Mic at the bottom of your StreamYard studio.
- Mute check. Are you using a headset or mic with a mute button? Did you mute your mic in your computer settings?
- Add yourself to the stage. In order to be seen and heard, you need to be added to the stage. Mouse over the small box at the bottom of the studio with your name on it, and click Add to stage.
- Test the speaker. If you're on a computer, it may be possible your speakers are not working. Go to Settings > Audio and click on Test button. If you don't hear music playing, try switching to a different speaker in the same section.
- Other programs. Is another program using your mic (Skype, Zoom)? Quit those, then refresh the page.
-
Browser permissions. Ensure that your browser has necessary permissions to access your microphone and camera.
-
Chrome
- Enter the studio.
- On the "Let's check your camera and mic" page, click on the View Site Info button (Camera Icon) located at the beginning of the URL bar.
- Click "Reset Permissions".
- Exit the StreamYard studio completely.
- Re-enter the studio.
- When prompted, click "Allow while visiting this site" to grant microphone access.
-
Firefox
- Enter the studio.
- On the "Let's check your camera and mic" page, click on the Camera Icon button located at the beginning of the URL bar.
- Click on the X next to the "Use the Microphone" section. (This will make StreamYard lose access to your Mic and Camera)
- Exit the StreamYard studio completely.
- Re-enter the studio.
- When prompted, click "Allow StreamYard to use your Camera and Microphone", make sure the correct Mic and camera are selected, then click Allow.
-
If the issue persists, restart your device: this often resolves most problems.
If your mic still doesn’t work, test it here. If it’s not detected, your browser can't access the mic feed, meaning StreamYard can't either. This may indicate a faulty microphone or a device detection issue.
Check your system settings:
For users on macOs using Chromium-based browsers:
Users using Chromium-based browsers (e.g. Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc.) might be affected by a macOS audio quirk that prevents the browser to access the peripheral correctly. You might be impacted if:
- The mic fails only in Chromium-based browsers or WebRTC apps (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Electron apps like Slack, etc.)
- Safari or native apps (FaceTime, Voice Memos, etc.) can access your input peripherals correctly
- You see errors like "Your browser has lost connection to your mic. Make sure no other apps are using your camera/mic, then refresh the page. Restart your device if this continues." or "Looks like your mic was unplugged. Plug it back in or select a different mic. Click the mic button to unmute yourself when you're ready." inside the StreamYard Studio
- You have already reset permissions and the correct input device is selected
The issue seems to be caused by a corrupted state in macOS Mic Mode (e.g. Standard, Voice Isolation). You can attempt to fix this by manually toggling the mic mode:
- Enter a StreamYard Studio
- Click on the green FaceTime icon from the top-right of your system menu bar
- Change the audio mode to a different mode (e.g. Standard -> Voice Isolation)
- Switch back to the original mode
- Restart your browser
